7) Shinto and Christianity (2) Eight million gods

Shinto (the way of gods) has spiritual bonds with many of the rituals, festivals, and prayers in Japan.

This ancient religion honors ancestors and pays tribute to local deities. According to a Shinto belief, there are eight million gods in Japan.

Japanese gods are called “eight million gods” The eight million gods exist in every nature such as mountain, sea, forest, or water. Worshipping the nature, our ancestors lived peacefully with the nature. The eight million gods are not omnipotent, so they cooperate in protection of our nature world.

Shinto gods are associated with the nature objects such as mountains, sea, trees, or rock.

Shinto has no religious law and written scripts. With no founder, Shintoism expresses love and respect for nature, but it has no moral codes for right and wrong.

A religion shapes people’s values and perception of the world. With Christian traditions (communist countries excluded), Europeans and Americans believe in one God, one truth, and one justice. They are sensitive to distinction between right and wrong. They see the world is a battlefield between good and evil.

Shinto worships many gods and accepts many truths. There are a lot of truths, so the distinction between truth and lies is not clear. Many gods are right, so the distinction between good right and wrong is not clear. There are many kinds of justice, so the distinction between good and evil is not clear. In Shinto, the world is not a battlefield between good and evil.

Shinto blurs the difference between right and wrong, good and evil, and truth and lies.
