Japanese people have no concept of sin and repentance. Unlike Christianity, Shinto doesn’t teach moral standards for right and wrong. It emphasizes purity and love for nature, but does not promote justice.
People who grew up in Christian culture are embarrassed by the Japanese indifference to right and wrong. As a consequence, the Japanese are seen as being unrepentant regarding their war crimes.

Japanese newspaper (1937) reported the contest to kill 100 people using a sword in China. Two army officers were engaged in a completion to see who could kill the most first.
The headline reads, “Incredible Record” (in the Contest to Cut Down 100 people)—Mukai 106–Noda 105—Both Lieutenants Go into Extra Innings. The two officers were later executed on war crime charges for their involvement.

It is difficult for Japanese people to recognize the problem of evil. Shinto values the purity of appearance, so Japanese people hide inconvenient facts to improve appearance.

The indifference of the Japanese about war crimes can be seen in the Nanjing Incident, Comfort Women, or Bataan Death March in WWII.

Below are the photos of Prime ministers and lawmakers worshipping at Yasukuni Shrine (Junichiro Koizumi, Shinzo Abe)

The prime ministers and lawmakers perform the ritual of State Shinto (Emperor worship). In WWII, the Army and Navy soldiers of Imperial Japan worshiped the spirits of dead soldiers at Yasukuni Shrine. The leaders and soldiers are trying to honor Japan as the great country.

Asians, especially Chinese and Koreans, protest the visit of Yasukuni Shrine as revival of Japanese militarism. In their perceptions, some Japanese politicians are trying to whitewash Japan’s past crimes and atrocities.

The leaders of Japan are unable to repent Japanese sins because Shinto does not teach the concept of sin and repentance. The Japanese leaders are supposed to whitewash Japan by hiding unpleasant facts about it. Shinto teaches the appearance of Japan’s beauty is more important than God’s truth and justice.

Shinto is the religion of whitewashing, and it attempts to hide unpleasant facts about Japan.
